This is the first post I’ve made about my Basic Animation class. For assignment one, we were to pull six character images for inspiration. I chose Hugo the Abominable Snowman, Henchman 21, the Juggernaut, the Monarch, Batman, and Marvin the Martian.

Then we studied the basic outlines and contour lines.

Then we did more detailed lines over the top and colored the freshly-drawn characters.

We were then to create three remixed characters from pairs of our inspiration images, give them names, and interpret their personalities, perhaps with some backstory.

King Hugo the Nominally Intelligent- As the name suggests, our triangle-shaped character is a king with somewhat suspect mental capacity. Hugo refuses to let his lack of brain power stop him in his never-ending quest to do… Something? When he remembers what that exact Something is, or perhaps when Kevin reminds him, he shall sally forth boldly to do that Something!

This is Kevin. The Sidekick. The Constantly Exhausted and Put-Upon. As King Hugo’s Sidekick (TM), Kevin is in charge of all the important duties associated with dogsbody to the King: running messages, retrieving wine, finding the king’s pants, checking under the bed for monsters, and remembering what the purpose of the king’s quest is. Or if he has a quest. The usual Sidekick duties.

The Massive Dancing Martian (or “MDM” as he shall henceforth be referred to) is a sweet-natured giant who came to earth in order to learn to move more gracefully after accidentally destroying his home city. Taken by the fluid movements of the dances of King Hugo’s realm, he hopes to learn to control his strength and movements better. Due to his massive size, he is somewhat clumsy, accidentally knocking over vases, chairs, castle towers and the like while dancing with all the delicacy and lightness of a Mack truck.
